The town itself is steeped in history. It was founded in 800AD and has preserved many of its historical buildings which can be seen throughout the town. Buildings, such as medieval houses, Shrewsbury Castle and Shrewsbury Abbey are all worth seeing. During the Middle Ages, the town was the centre of the wool trade in England.
Today Shrewsbury is a lively Market Town and the main hub in the county of Shropshire. It has a population of around 100,000 and is a popular tourist destination. There are several festivals held throughout the year and plenty of cultural and shopping opportunities. Several internationally famous people hail from Shrewsbury, such as Charles Darwin, the poet Wilfred Owen and the actor/comedian Michael Palin.
Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust provides health care through 2 main hospital sites, The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and The Princess Royal Hospital in nearby Telford. Together they serve half a million people in the Shropshire and mid-Wales area. In the future, the in-patient paediatric services based each hospital will combine to become a single, modern unit which will make it one of the largest paediatric units in the country.
The hospital has 5,000 staff and is one of the largest employers in the area. The Trust prioritises a healthy work-life balance for all its staff. This is realised through a number of ways, such as family-friendly policies, flexible working arrangements, salary sacrifice schemes and staff gyms and restaurants located at both hospital sites.
